If noone minds, may I make a comment about the actual game in this match thread? Threads about BG and his P45 are multiplying like rabbits so it's not as if there's nowhere else to talk about it.
Didn't watch the game myself so only going off the highlights. You could tell how much it meant to everyone at Walsall with the mad celebrations after penalties! Anyway, about the actual football. The obvious takeaways are the inability to stop or defend crosses which has carried on from the Ipswich game. Ayunga impressed (I liked his interview too - seems a good lad) and should be starting on Saturday (and our named peno taker?). Lovely strike from Mehew and surely a positive having an academy player make an impact.
I see there were rumblings of sideways passing across the back going nowhere. I think we'll be seeing that for the foreseeable future. It's good patience when we break forward and score but bad frivolity if it goes nowhere. I don't think our defenders passing between themselves will be pivotal in winning or losing matches to be honest.
What I'm keen to know is how we played through midfield. In the Ipswich game the front 3 had to come too deep to collect the ball and couldn't break into the final third enough. Against poorer opposition was there more fluency going forward? Did rovers move the ball forward more quickly? How much time did we spend around their box? And did we create more chances that were not shown in the highlights?
If anyone who watched who wants to talk about football can answer I'd be much appreciative.

Isnât this the competition that most people usually say âplay the kidsâ or âexperiment with formations/tacticsâ and âgive him a run out to get some minutesâ, oh and the classic âi hope we lose so we are knocked out of this tin pot cupâ? Cant have it both ways just to suit your agenda. 'Play the kids' or 'experiment with formations/tactics' and 'give him a run out to get some minutes' is exactly what the group stage of this competition is about. How many on here have actually watched any matches before? Can't be many judging by the crowds since the fans' boycott began, but now it's on iFollow for all to see, people are up in arms at the standard of play. Well, having watched this trophy since iFollow first started, I'll tell you that was one of the better games as far as movement and urgency is concerned. You'd have all been suicidal after the Stevenage game last season against a side rock bottom of the football league that looked more 10th tier than National League. We can't judge anything until at least ten games into the season. The magical 10 games again. What if I judge after 9.5, I haven't been fair?

This season may only last 10 games. Points on board are what you need.not excuses or experimenting. that should have been done pre season

Ten league games is the minimum but is probably not enough either. And you certainly can't judge him after two cup games and a few friendlies, or on last season because he's got a whole new team to gel. The squad last night had no Westbrooke or Nicholson in it, and ML only came on as a sub don't forget. He's still working on his best 11. It used to take Clarke longer that ten games to get it together every season.

Difference is. The guy inherited a winning team. Christ any one in the ground on boxing day could have managed that team. Say to the players before game do what you are doing and then go and sit in the dug out for the rest of season

Then he can get another 10 games as will need the new team to gel. It's about as if the lockdown was for BG, it's like he's on a rolling 10 game bullshit contract.

Difference is. The guy inherited a winning team. Christ any one in the ground on boxing day could have managed that team. Say to the players before game do what you are doing and then go and sit in the dug out for the rest of season I'd disagree. BG inherited a lucky team. The actual results GC achieved in no way resembled what we should have achieved based on performances (expected goals). The stats show that as a team we deserved more than we got with BG last season. It's still not good enough, but we must be very careful not to judge a manager (in the short-term) purely on results. I understand that everyone is impatient, but if we don't build a solid foundation we'll never build anything. It may or may not work out for BG, but chastizing a man based on two cups games (and for that matter two league games Sunderland and Ipswich) is not wise. If, having assembled his team, things have not worked out by Xmas I'd agree with the doubters. In the meantime I'm happy to give him and the team time to create something we can be proud of.

Dont buy this inexperience excuse. It's not as if he just stopped playing and became a manager. Majority of his working life has been on the coaching or assistant side. Of course players like good old ben makes the coaching fun by moving the cones around so they look good. But he is not and never will be a manager of a successful lower league team. Can you please stop making bold opinions as if they're facts? Your prediction may well be true, however I'd hope that you'd come on here and admit you were wrong if BG did finally succeed. For what it's worth I really really hope he turns it around, because if he does we could be in for an exciting couple of years. If he doesn't, he'll be gone in a couple of months.

I'd be very surprised if they did it on PPG. It was only voted on that basis last season due to it being so close to the end of the season anyway.

This thread is laughable. When was the last time we had a manager who people actually supported? Oh right, it was DC because he communicated well with fans even though we were heading for Division 2! This forum wanted GC out because he played unattractive football even when we were winning games; there was an anti-Trollope campaign even when we were in the top half of League 1; in fact I think the last manager the fans got behind before DC was Gerry Francis. And the one before that was probably Bill Dodgin though he was lucky that social media was not around in late 1960s. It would be safe to say that BG could win the next 10 games and there would still be people calling for his head (he was lucky; the opposition was crap; his win ratio is still only x%). The match last night was a tin pot competition where we rightly played several youngsters to get experience - some played well in patches (eg Mehew, Harries) and some (eg Kelly) did not. I wish we had played Andre in goal though maybe the rules stopped us making more changes. We created chances, scored 2 good goals, were let down by our central defenders (and goalkeeper) for their two goals. We look forward to Saturday, we hope Sunderland have used their goal quota for the week, and since this match thread for a nothing match has created 25 pages of comment, we look forward to the 75 page meltdown on Saturday evening.

What was scary was that we were outplayed and deserved to lose to a side at the bottom of league 2.

Unfortunately our passes weren't just backwards and sideways, they were often misplaced, gifting possession to Walsall in dangerous areas. Harries, Kelly and Baldwin the biggest culprits.
As for our forward play, I'm afraid apart from a 10 minute spell in the first half it was no better than against Ipswich. Despite trying to play out from the back, we didn't have the quality to play through midfield and almost always ended up launching the ball forward from the defence or keeper. In truth, we created very little, only an opportunity for Mehew in the first half could be considered a real chance.
I'm not sure how BG can say we had 5 or 6 glorious chances. That simply wasn't the case. Walsall will be the ones disappointed they didn't win the match in 90 minutes. They created the better openings and were unlucky with an effort that came back off te post.
Very few positives in my opinion. Ayunga took his goal well but doesn't look a L1 player yet. One for the future hopefully but not the answer right now. Mehew too, shows potential but also made some basic errors. Mitchell-Lawson looked good when he came on but that's about it.
We still look very vulnerable at the back and pretty clueless going forward.

Agree with just about everything. Just to add, from the last 2 games, midfield seem to lose too many balls and are slow to turn and move the ball forward. Very few chances being created,

Nah, far easier for the defence committee to just change the criteria to something more achievable. If winning games is too difficult letâs change it to less than 50 goals conceded in the next 10 games. Even Garner should have no trouble meeting that target. Although, after the way we have gone about defending in the last 2 games....

Itâs worrying in and of itself that for us itâs pretty important to actually know what that criteria would be before we kick off!

Is it just me or does it seem to be a recurring theme that we create 5 or 6 glorious chances that the manager saw but no-one else did? Hmm.... Reminds me of Clarkey saying if he could give his younger self some advice what would it be: âBe honest with the fansâ. Ben obviously would not agree!
