Forget all this talk of giving Ben Stokes a Knighthood. That's just nonsense. Because apparently, the Pope has been on the phone this morning to the ECB. He has heard that this is the second miracle Stokes has performed this Summer, and he wants to make him a Saint !

Roy is fine in one day cricket, against a white ball that moves less in the air and off the seam than the red ball used in test cricket. He looks hopelessly lost in the five day game. Buttler too, at the moment. Keeping those two, means that we`re pretty much playing the last two tests with nine men. I know that Jennings has failed before at this level, but at least he`s making a few runs for Lancs right now. I don`t see how he can possibly give us a worse start than Roy.

The other problem is although Denly hung around in the second innings, he just looks like a player who is hanging on for dear life. I assume, after that second innings, he will be kept on, but he looks like his wicket could go at any moment and has never looked comfortable at the crease. Then there is Foakes. A Test batting average of over 40. Questions have to be asked about Buttler and Bairstow as both are struggling for runs. Foakes is also probably the better keeper of the three. How about giving Bairstow a run at opening instead of Roy? Then give the gloves to either Buttler or Foakes?

Good post, pretty much what I've been saying about Roy & Buttler.
I'd put Denley to open, and either move Roy down to middle order , or bring someone else in.
Roy is a walking wicket opening, just try and change things around a bit.
Buttler was unlucky in 2nd inns, but he hasn't contributed anything in 3 tests now, how long do we give him?

But there is always that little voice in the back of your head that says if Roy or Buttler just pull it off once, then we'll win that test match ! I think Buttler has to forget he's playing in a test match. He should try the Adam Gilchrist approach and just attack, no matter what the situation. Sometimes it will not work, but when it does it can change the game completely.

Hey, late to this party.
I hate cricket. Genuinely can't stand it. But watching Specsavers and nightclub fighter own the Aussies on the weekend was excellent television.

Oh, no... Steady William, steady. There are 'others' out there in the world. Remember when you traveled on the Trans-Siberian Railway, and the train stopped at that god forsaken place in the middle of nowhere (well, Siberia actually) where you spoke to one of the locals? Apparently, he didn't like Cricket either. So you see, neilv93 is not alone. There are 'others of the same persuasion'.

Oh, no... Yeah it's terrible and boring as hell for the most part (says this snooker fan) but watching the Leach/Stokes finale was special so kudos for that.

So, why has Archer transformed into a 82/83mph county trundler?

But we also got very lucky and should have lost the one match he did not play in as well. Other than Broad, and Archer at times, their bowling has also been far superior. To have the ability to rotate four world class fast bowlers is unbelievable.

Losing Anderson for the series, was a massive blow. And Root is utterly wasted, batting at No 3. Not sure he is captain material either.

If he was on our side we’d have won the series.

The first test we had the Aussies at 124-8 (?) in their first innings. Smith saved them there. If we had bowled them out for less than 150, England could well have gone on to win the game. The second test had the Aussies hanging on for a draw. With some slight changes, England could have been 2-0 up.
