The Case For The Defence
When all is not going to plan and it is a tough watch at times it can pay to step back and reflect.
Failure to create openings and finish off good approach play are evident and painful. Crawley Town comes to mind.
At the other end of the pitch, solidity, bravery and commitment can easily be overlooked. Despite Wigan hiccup and Jo Low's late header.
Some of the available data can suggest an intriguing viewpoint. Even so, some may not see the selected stats as a positive.
Entering this match Mansfield Town are 7th and have W * 7, D * 3, L * 3, Pts * 24.
Meanwhile, we are 14th in League One and have W * 5, D * 3, L * 7, Pts * 18.
I have looked at some data which presents an interesting perspective ahead of the Mansfield Town fixture next Saturday.
Some relevant selected League One statistics for the two sides in relation to ALL League One sides this season.
AERIAL DUELS WON
Bristol Rovers * 441 (4th) * v (17th) 274 * Mansfield Town
CLEARANCES
Bristol Rovers * 427 (1st) * v (18th) 317 * Mansfield Town
BLOCKS
Bristol Rovers * 63 (1st) * v (6th) 56 * Mansfield Town
INTERCEPTIONS
Bristol Rovers * 207 (1st) * v (17th) 124 * Mansfield Town
In addition, Bristol Rovers have conceded NIL penalties and NIL own goals.
M'lud. I rest the case for the defence.
Obviously, stats looking at issues such as Headed Goals, Offsides, Red Cards and Shots On Target paint a very different picture.
Other stats not included point very specifically at the top end of the pitch where we have been lacking in depth and availability.
For example, Bristol Rovers leading league goalscorers are: Shaq Forde, Jamie Lindsay, Promise Omochere and Scott Sinclair (2 each).
Mansfield Town leading league goalscorers are: Lee Gregory (7) and Will Evans (5). There is a different story here.
Two fit and firing strikers make a massive difference to the outcome of games and league position.

Objection your honour. I hearby present the xG Conceded information for the defence, putting us 2nd bottom, with only Shrewsbury with a worse record by 0.2%.

Park the bus handbrake stuff Saturday, got Udders all over it.
Then we chase the game, medal ceremony after for really having a go at them.
MT “we’ve got to cut out individual mistakes and take our chances. Nothing in it for first 30 mins and then they started to control the game. We will have to see how Chris is, he complained of a bad back, just our luck right now”
Grant Ward “we’ve got to keep working hard, we’ve got to step up as a team collectively”
Hadwin “it’s great you have a home game now Tuesday night Matt you can try and put this right straight away and not dwell on it?”……….MT “yeah our home form has been good this season and sustained us, we know Blackpool will be a difficult side and Steve Bruce will have them well drilled”
This has been on repeat now for 52 games or it like this every other week.

Does anyone know if it’s pay on the day? Don’t want to commit until the weather situation is clearer - in other words no frozen pitch!

That’s the one thing about modern football that annoys me the most. Being able to wake up on a sat morning and think….”sod it , I’m going to football today” . Spontaneity was great .

"I made the substitutions because I felt we were struggling a bit at 3-0 up, and I thought we re-established our control of the game, once they`d got it back to 3-3".

Might be called off according to some home fans. Pitch is covered in snow and temperatures are -2/-3 each night

No reason why we can't get a result at Mansfield. Their home record is nothing special and we seem to be quite competitive at the moment.

A few ex-Gas playing for Mansfield.. perhaps most notably, a proper Gashead, Alfie Kilgour (WYHHB?)
But also: Tommy "Goals" Nichols George Williams Calum MacDonald Hiram Boatang (albeit a brief loan)
Any others?

Our away form/results against the top L1 sides is shocking, the only game we've avoided defeat was at Rotherham and they haven't turned out to be the force we thought they would be. We probably haven't been able to train outdoors this week just to make matters worse.

Talking of which, I saw Ollie limping along the High St in Portishead on Saturday. Not sure Holloway would be best pleased he wasn’t resting up.

I’m not optimistic about our chances in any away matches tbh - the only positive I’m clinging to is that by law of averages we must win away at some point so why not Saturday 🤞!!!

Although I'll have my more optimistic head on Saturday, I just see this as Mansfield seem to want it more, are hungrier for a result and our normal Field Mill struggle will continue.
Difficult to see anything other than a comfortable home win but we always have a chance. It could snow more...
