I totally understand your point. Yet... for reasons I can't put my finger on.... I do genuinely feel sad. Not sure why - never met her, not overly bothered about the Monarch generally speaking - but.... I don't know.... feels like I've lost someone I knew. I fully appreciate how ridiculous it sounds and I've massively surprised myself with how much it's hit me - I think it's losing something that's been so constant. Maybe it's the things it's linked to. I don't know. I lost my mum a few years back and I've already thought once or twice "wow - my mum would have been shocked by this" and maybe it's through links to her passing I actually feel the sadness. Either way, I'm surprised at how I feel - but it's definitely genuine, as crazy as that may sound (and indeed does, even to myself). Well put RD same for me it has stirred up a lot of emotion in me which I am surprised at,I think it's that I think of my recently passed parents,a Omaha D day veteran, stoic and uncomplaining, never wanted thanks for what they did and a value set that is fast disappearing. The Queen was out the same mold, she understood her privileged position but lived her life with humility and without hubris a lesson many of our politicians could learn Omaha Beach? He must have witnessed some horrors. Did he pilot some of the landing craft?

He was 19 and in the RN medical corp, job was to patch them up when they hit the beach and to get them back on to the hospital boat, went back and forth across the channel for 6 days Wouldn't speak to me about but strangely in his last 10 years he would to my other half, fair to say his experience was horrendous and he went from being very religious to an atheist. But how about this he saved his pay and had bought a full length Burberry coat to keep him warm, wasnt allowed it on D Day and along with letters to my Mum and last Will it was all put in a locked wooden box and stored in Portsmouth along with everyone else's,when he eventually got back it had been broken into and nicked!!

Kind and tolerant lefties showing their colours as per usual. They had street parties for thatcher, they’ll probably be showing the same kind tolerance towards HMQ. Oh do be quiet. Guy couldnt be more of a capitalist. The climate change alarmist vegan who never shuts up about social responsibility and sustainability? He’s just a rich leftie. Not a capitalist.

It's classic Daily Mail / Express stuff It's getting bigger than the nonsense spouted in those reactionary rags. Climate change denial, workers' rights, abortion rights, human rights are all under attack and becoming mainstream here and in the US. It's very worrying.

Such a shame but you must be proud. Funny that people don't appreciate quite how many British forces were involved in Omaha.

Respect for your opinion and words RD. And Gassy, yes I am asking why people are reacting the way they are. RD makes a cogent point about his sense of personal loss. I don't feel that way at all, in fact I have sneaky sense of liberation, the passing of Elizabeth (for clarity whatever my opinions I never wished her ill health or death) removes the ballast from our system of "monarchy" which, I hope, will lead to constitutional change. The fawning, ridiculous programme on R4 this morning sums up, for me, the absolute need for change. FWIW I totally understand your position oldie and I wouldn't blame anyone at all (in fact, I'd think they were "normal") if they don't feel any sense of loss. I'm shocked at how I feel, genuinely. Don't get me wrong, I'm not an inconsolable mess or anything. Just feel a sense of almost personal loss which is utterly, utterly bizarre!

Such a shame but you must be proud. Funny that people don't appreciate quite how many British forces were involved in Omaha. Very proud Stuart, yep the Americans basically erased from history our contribution at Omaha, helped by Spielbergs portrayal in Saving PTE Ryan. Another anecdote Dad told me he was caring for a wounded German officer on the way back to Portsmouth, the guy was very concerned mid channel because he had been told mid channel the LTA opened its bow doors and pushed the Germans into the sea, when they arrived in Portsmouth the officer had nothing to give my Dad for the care he had received so he tore of his Afrika corps ensignia and gave them to him, when I was clearing Dad's house we found them in my Dad's old war leather wallet, how poignant.

As you well know, what is happening is a return to the status quo, overturning recent decades where society was changing. But be a smartass if you like, as you are in most of your posts. If it makes you happy...

If it makes you happy... Sounds like you’re the status quo mate. Women have had abortion rights since 1967, and I’m not aware of any deterioration in U.K. employment law. I think the old status quo hasn’t been around since most of us were born.
