Nice side swerve!! But in general, don't you feel that the comments made on camera indicated that those that spoke felt Elizabeth was better than us and "deserved" her status? No side swerve, I didn't listen to all the interviews but probably a good selection. I'd say they covered the full spectrum but on the whole were supportive of her without going overboard. I listened to Jeremy Corbyn in the House of Commons a couple of years ago, he made a clear distinction between respect for the person whilst acknowledging his dislike for institution. Ok. As you can probably guess I saw the whole day long events yesterday as an "opiate for the masses". A splendid pantomime whilst the masses stare on in an act of grotesque voyeurism into the private grief, eagerly watching for a tear or a misstep. Meanwhile, in the real world...

when does respect become State propaganda. Couldn't watch The Baseball without a Queen placeholder and sombre music every 10-15 minutes
Mass media TV events are usually cash cows for commercial broadcasters, with 30-second ad breaks in an X Factor final or an England game in the latter stages of a major football tournament running to hundreds of thousands of pounds. However, there was a total TV advertising blackout after the death of the Queen, in accordance with a protocol agreement with Buckingham Palace, over most of the weekend.

Then you are mistaken and the faux intellectual superiority using terms like those doesn't sit well with me. In the real world we all have different life experiences and formulate opinions based on that. My view is no more valid than yours.

Of course. But not one which, at great expense, delivers no quantifiable benefit to society, over another which absolutely does. I would call you out on duty as well, what exactly does that mean in this case, other than deference? We aren't going to agree much here, doesn't mean either of us is right or wrong. Cost wise, these types of events are rare and the alternative type of office you would prefer isn't necessarily cheaper either. We are coming from different ends with regards to duty or deference. I see deference as being subjugated into doing something and thinking someone is better. Nobody is better than anyone else. Duty is more to the individual who a person has earned their respect or perhaps the office they hold. Perhaps the phrase 'those who understand need no explanation, those who need an explanation will not understand' is suitable here. We are absolutely subjugated. In our capitalist society we are kept down by those with wealth and power. It is a wonderful lie that one of the richest women in the world feels a sense of duty. She waves at the idiot masses from her carriage. Tough gig. Maybe she could build a homeless shelter, fund nursing care or something similar. We have had days of pomp and pageantry for someone when there are families queuing at food banks. Niceties like a rich royal family who represent the finest of everything is a luxury that should be afforded AFTER the rest of the country can at least sit in a warm, safe house and eat a healthy balanced meal.

Funnily enough I agree with a lot of what you say, though not all. In terms of a 'luxury', again I won't argue it costs and needs to be pared back. We still need a Head of State though, that's not free whichever brand we may prefer. We are a relatively rich country and I am upset by a lot of what goes on. We need to do better in so many ways.

I think the funeral coverage was over the top but inevitable, and my opinion is that history will show it was the last of its kind.
I see it all as Britain mourning the loss of a woman who tried, in her own outdated way, to make the monarchy worth something in the modern age, despite having grown up in a different era, and a woman who did it all with a sense of duty, perhaps more the institution than the nation, but still an attitude that was not purely self serving. She was the only monarch the vast majority of us had ever known, and the grief was for her as a person, not for the monarchy.
I agree with a lot of the comments about the Royal Family and their irrelevance and privilege nowadays, but that discussion should start now, not in the week a well meaning elderly woman had died.

News almost back to normal now. Not sure which I prefer. Fawning royalty or economic doom. Admit it, it took our minds off all the cr@p for a few days.
