Parts of North America and Greece are burning, other areas of the world are under water due to flooding. Whilst we are apparently one of 5 countries that could be okay, we will not be immune and the effects could cause a rise in conflict and human migration. Regrettably I know there are still plenty who deny either the whole notion or that it is somehow a natural phenomenon and humans aren't affecting the planet. We are hosting COP 26 later this year and the IPCC report has just been published. The latest report shows that it is highly likely that humans have caused climate change. Key points; Global surface temperature was 1.09C higher in the decade between 2011-2020 than between 1850-1900. The past five years have been the hottest on record since 1850 The recent rate of sea level rise has nearly tripled compared with 1901-1971 Human influence is "very likely" (90%) the main driver of the global retreat of glaciers since the 1990s and the decrease in Arctic sea-ice It is "virtually certain" that hot extremes including heatwaves have become more frequent and more intense since the 1950s, while cold events have become less frequent and less severe www.bbc.co.uk/news/science-environment-58130705www.google.com/amp/s/www.euronews.com/green/amp/2021/07/30/three-european-countries-named-as-best-places-to-be-in-case-of-total-societal-collapse

This isn’t a wind up, but I would genuinely be interested to hear pirate views on climate change and whether he believes it’s real, without all the Twitter posts though I know there’s a big movement in the US about it being a ‘natural cycle of the earth’. Trump himself didn’t believe in it right? I’m pretty confident that we’re screwed, we won’t turn it around.

It's a pity so many refused to admit there was a problem 30 years ago when many of us were warning of this. We wouldn't have to make such a drastic change.

Can you even see us doing anything radical in the short term? After France announced going to electric cars we matched and upped their deadline. I’m not sure any other major country did so? I just can’t see countries actually getting together to do something until something absolutely crazy happens, like millions die in a heatwave/flood, or something in a major nation.

Probably not, at least not until it's in a nations commercial and economic interest. Think Industrial Revolution scale.

Just to add my 2 pence worth on this..... whilst I believe the earth clearly has natural cycles of climate change evidenced by world ice ages and then the earths' natural warming after the ice ages is it totally impossible for the earth to be going through a natural cycle? I believe no it's not, however I do believe this change is also being influenced by and perhaps speeded up via Co2 emissions. What I would like to see is Greta Thunberg rather than get on her soap box and preach to the likes of the UK, who produce minuscule amounts of CO2 compared to the top five, go to China, Russia, USA, India and Japan and preach to them. Unless these top 5, especially China, are prepared to do something drastic to reduce their emissions then what are we to do. The UKs reduction alone won't change a thing.

For whatever reason the climate is changing and as a species we are forced to adapt and survive or fail to adapt and die out. If we have the ability to buy time and slow progress or even reverse some of the damage, we have to do it. We won't of course, because of capitalism, short-termism and general human selfishness but we should. As for the Greta bit I still have no idea why she seems to get under the skin of so many people. Don't listen to her if you don't want to, the problem still exists.

She’s done a great job highlighting climate issues and at such a young age .

Argue the science (its undeniable so you cannot) but why focus on 18 year old (I think thats how old she is) rather than the problems at hand.

I think they dislike her because deep down they know for sure what she’s saying is true and it makes them feel guilty. So rather than try and change , adapt and move with the times it’s easier to lash out and attack so they can keep on driving their big cars , taking their multiple flights etc etc .

Based on the scientific data and analysis we have, it’s kinda impossible tbf. But as OB mentioned, it doesn’t matter really - what’s vital is that we do something either way to ensure our survival, surely?

If this was a 50 year old guy who was saying this, and many of them are, no one would care - which no one does. I’m not accusing anyone of sexism so apologies if it causes offence, but I do believe it has something to do about being told what to do by a 14 year old girl. I would also hazard a bet that those who have a problem with Greta, and folate change for that matter, are inclined to be on the right side of the political spectrum.

I just find Greta falls into the second category. All very well sailing from UK to USA to make a speech but dont fly the yachts men from America to UK to take you there.I would also like to know how she gets from country to country carbon free. Also the likes of Emma Thompson who attended the extinction rebellion demos in London then two days later flew first class to a from the States for work. Total hypocrisy. Seems a case by the pair of them of do as I say not as I do.

As if, in todays world, shouting from a cave would make the slightest difference. Whilst a younger person, with a clear message, might actually communicate and get across to a young generation whose lives will be most impacted by what we have done. Not them, we. How dare they use all means open to them to get their message across.

I'll travel from country to country via plane, to dictate to people they shouldn't fly and airlines need to reduce their emissions. Surely you find that somewhat hypocritical.

Pure and simple. By the way, who is dictating we shouldn't fly? It has not happened. A complete red herring. What we need to do is recognise the cost of doing so, rightly so.

I’ve been saying for a while we should have a flying quota , no more than 6/7 flights allowed every 5 yrs . I think I’ve had one flight ( to Kos last summer) in the last 5 yrs . We drive to France most summers for our holidays . We could easily have jumped on a plane from Bristol to Toulouse but we choose to drive instead , partly for costs but mostly for environmental reasons and just because we can .
