So the Uk is currently suffering 1 death per hundred thousand whilst the EU is suffering what, .7 per 100k. The UK has the biggest testing regime and we have ID'd the new mutant strains earlier than other countries. Perhaps we're identifying and counting in these factors quicker than others. What say you?

Nearly 50% higher than the EU per deaths. The factors of finding a new strain has nothing to do with deaths per 100k anyway, completely different points. But it’s true that we’re set up better than many countries to identify this. (As a quick fun jab - you do realise that this would have been done whilst being an EU country, we didn’t set it all up in 12 months did we 😂 ) Tbh I actually find it stupid comparing the UK to the entire EU on cases or deaths. The EU isn’t one country, it’s made up of 27 with different cultures, health systems, rules, laws etc. It would be fairer to compare us directly with Germany, France, Spain & Italy.

Nor me,I don't get it,I assume the vaccine can be used for someone else, however if that rate of non attendance is replicated across the Country then the impact on vaccination rates will be significant .

I’m sorry, are you saying I’m stupid making this comparison? I’m only commentating on a graph posted by another user. I would be interested to hear how you think the UK could better deal with this pandemic

I would be interested to hear how you think the UK could better deal with this pandemic Not at all, I'm saying in general it's stupid. As a graph it can make sense - sure (as long as there are other nations). But realistically, to make direct comparisons its stupid. I've mentioned it many a time earlier in the Covid thread, but of course I wouldn't expect you to go back through hundreds of pages. In short: 1. Should have locked down earlier (On all 3) 2. Should have also stopped flights into the country around March, or at least banned flights from Italy/China etc 3. Should have made incoming flights test negative to enter 4. I'd make anyone entering the UK be legally obliged (like Australia) to stay in a hotel for 2 weeks as isolation. They'd have to pay for it too (keeping money coming in for them) 5. Cummings should have been fired on the spot at the time. 6. Increase testing much faster at the beginning 7. Build a test & trace that actually works 8. I would have got rid of tiers back in November after we saw they didn't work, nice idea - but not effective. 9. Increase fines heavily for breaking rules 10. I'd be separating hospitals from Covid vs non-Covid. So I'd designate certain amount of hospitals (in cities) to be Covid only patients so that others can continue as close to normality as they can (not sure if this is feasible though, just an idea) 11. I'd make all in-door spaces have a maximum allowance of people per square metre. Just off the top of my head - realise it isn't that short though! What would you do to better deal with the pandemic?

First "In a tweet, the president wrote: "Mike Pence didn't have the courage to do what should have been done to protect our Country and our Constitution, giving States a chance to certify a corrected set of facts, not the fraudulent or inaccurate ones which they were asked to previously certify. USA demands the truth!"
Earlier, Mr Trump repeated his claim that the election was stolen from him and called on Mr Pence to "do the right thing" and block the formal confirmation of Joe Biden's presidential win. "
And now one of his own Governors says:
"It comes as Republican Vermont governor Phil Scott said on Twitter that the "fabric of our democracy and the principles of our republic are under attack by the President".
"President Trump should resign or be removed from office by his Cabinet, or by the Congress," he added. "

What you're saying makes sense, however you have to balance this against the fact that we are a country that values personal freedom. The virus was first detected in China in 2018, they suppressed this, but had it been common knowledge then, would there have been demands to stop all flights from China? In short, I agree with what you've written, I just don't think it would have been accepted if they'd tried to enforce those things when you said.

I haven’t heard that. Would be keen to read more. Personally I’d have stopped flights from Wuhan & Italy in March when things got a bit mad. We already know that the first known cases in the UK came from both those countries, pretty much every country in Europe did this apart from us, so I don’t think it would have been viewed that badly. I think at the time we were trying to balance economy and health and we probably acted a bit too late. Interestingly now we’re looking to make meantime enter the UK test negative, a good move - just sadly too late imo.

A fair list. I cant help myself but I keep going back to: close borders, lockdown for 6 weeks. That would have done it I think. We would then be minimally affected if at all. Above all else the underlying root cause of all of our failures in my opinion is that we underestimated our enemy at all stages and we refused to accept the scale. We delayed the inevitable essentially and we needn't have.

I was surprised as well, however it was in an article I read in today's online Telegraph. It's a subscription piece so is behind a paywall. Can't post a link, sorry.
