The problem with this bl00dy competition is the disruption it has the potential to cause to team spirit, morale, motivation, momentum etc. etc.
I wonder how much of Pompey's recent downturn is due, albeit subconsciously, to the attitude of everyone at that club toward this cup. I'm not saying that they are wrong treating it with the disrespect it deserves, just that it has interrupted the normal operation of that club.
I hope it doesn't rub off on us too.
