With the England squad being announced today and the World Cup kicking off in 10 days timeI thought I would kick us off a thread.
I am hopeful rather than confident going into this one. It will be interesting to see if Southgate goes with players in form vs players that he trusts.
This would be my stab at who I think Southgate will pick in the first game vs Iran.
Pickford
Trippier Maguire Stones Shaw
Bellingham Rice Mount
Saka Kane Sterling
I really hope this is the tournament where Foden comes alive. He is such a good footballer.
Edit.. Here is your England World Cup Squad...

I've now attached the world Cup squad above. I had a feeling Southgate would pick Kalvin Phillips. When he took over he said about playing players in form etc but I think he has been manager for so long now he feels some loyalty to players that aren't necessarily in form but have done well for England previously (I'm thinking Phillips, Sterling, Maguire etc) I think 2 of those 3 will be in our starting 11.
What do we think guys?

Sterling is a definite and rightly so. Maguire maybe as part of the back 3, Ben White could well come into it, lads having a good season. Phillips, no chance of a start.
Overall, happy with the squad with whose available. Wouldn’t say there’s any ‘majorly unlucky’ to miss out.
Roll on the 21st!

Should he have taken Reece James if there was a good chance that he would be fit if we get through the group stages?

Should he have taken Reece James if there was a good chance that he would be fit if we get through the group stages? I think Southgate said best case scenario he would be available for the knockouts. As big of a miss as he will be I think it’s too much of a risk and you wouldn’t want to be throwing him in the deep end in a World Cup quarter final.

I hope the players return the loyalty that Southgate has shown. No real problems with what he’s chosen but Shaw, Maguire, Phillips, Walker, and Gallagher are either carrying injuries or have not even been playing regularly. I’m glad Sterling is there and was more amazed that some were questioning whether he would go or not. The Man U players, Maguire, even Shaw and Rashford have had an awful time and it seems to be that players who join that club become worse players not better and can think themselves fortunate to be going. I’m sure Jaydon Sancho must be having thoughts about the wisdom of joining them after missing out altogether. Contrast with Pope, Wilson and Trippier of Newcastle who after playing under Eddie H get better and better. Being a winter World Cup for the first time it will be something we haven’t seen before and may throw up some unusual things.
Will it be better for players to just carry on mid season than playing at the end of a long season? Some of our players have played almost continually since Summer ‘21 esp players like Kane who’s a continual first choice for whichever team he represents. And the heat they will be playing in will be quite exceptional.
I’m a bit meh... about the whole tournament but I expect I’ll change when it gets going.
UTG!

Really lacking in enthusiasm for this world cup at moment, used to season finishing then looking forward to the tournament starting few weeks later., seems very strange at this time of year, there we go needs must i suppose, the decision to have world cup there was appalling imho, we all know the process was corrupt and that the host country hold outdated views but its done now so hope the media concentrate on the football now, no doubt come kick off my interest level will rise somewhat and the frenzy will start after England's dismal showing in their first match!! Can England win it? it's possible but very unlikely, may have missed their chance last time .

Personally I'm a big fan of Ivan Toney and would have taken him. I hope his reasons for not going are footballing and not because of this betting investigation that suddenly appeared out of nowhere (I find that a bit odd).

I think Rashford is getting back to his best and has done well the last couple of months. Shaw at least is playing regularly again after being dropped earlier in the season. Even Maguire is at least getting some game time because of injuries to others! I wouldn’t have picked Gallagher but at least he is getting a decent amount of game time under Potter.

I quite fancy (bit of a dark horse) the Netherlands to be winners in this world cup. Great group of players and have gone under the radar.

Many hark on about England not winning anything with the occasional great squad and golden generations but the Dutch & more recently Belgium are football history’s real underachievers.

Some players suit international football better than English Prem too.

Some good young players like Musiala, Moukoko and Schlotterbeck, with the more experienced heads like Neuer, Rudiger, Gundogan, Gnabry, Sane, Kimmich and Muller etc.

Just merely pointing out that he's not in form and Southgate is showing his loyalty. He was arguably our best player last year.

Yep, I know who my support is with that's for sure. And it's not just that, you know the same old faces will let us down in an England shirt, the namby pamby over paid Premiership crap that get selected time and time again. I'll just support the Gas.

Can’t say many have let us down at all since GS came into the job. Far from it infact, some of our best memories & moments since ‘66 have been made under his tenure. Looking forward to more ‘disappointment’ this time round😁😁

Even for the decent striking options, if Kane got injured we are screwed.
