Entertaining match, littered with errors on our part, and some wasteful finishing, we all thought afterwards we have played worse than than at times. Work in progress but Alfie Kilgour is not obviously part of it, he said he wants Connolly and the two loanees as the three at the back. My optimism has wavered but viewing is not boring. If that's the case why wasn't he told to find a new club during the summer? The stats suggest Gibbons will ever be fit enough to play every match.

I wasn’t there today so won’t comment on individuals I didn’t see. But... Yes, we have a lot of injuries but the red card absences are down to us and our indiscipline. That is not unprecedented. We had more red cards last season than anybody else and must be up there already this season. I fear that will always be our handicap and without improving our red card account we are heading in one direction only, down. Ipswich was ridiculous, two reds in the last 5minutes when the game was gone, I’d just about recovered by today but realised that those were part of today’s result as well in effect. I was at Pompey so know we get nothing from referees and I think ‘Joey Barton’s Bristol Rovers’ get nothing from the referees and any 50/50 goes against us.(Something I’ve never said in 56 years of supporting us.) JB has to stop feeling sorry for us, stop publicity-seeking formations, go back to defenders defending and attackers attacking and make us hard to beat. He shouldn’t be the story but he is. It’s a pattern which can’t be good for BRFC. Although I’ve loved much of his football and believe he can be a very good manager so far this season he’s been the news story not the team and that can’t be good. I hope he will draw back from making himself a back page story, trying to sound clever in the local press with talk of different formations and stop p****** off other managers. He needs to concentrate on teaching our team to defend, on getting the midfield to support the defence and attack and getting back to being good at what he’s good at doing....concentrating on the team. Joe, you don’t need to court controversy be assured it will find you without you trying. Go undercover, send Mangan to do interviews and concentrate on the team. And stop this back 3 stuff like you did last season. It didn’t work then, it’s not working now, go back to a back 4. Please. UTG! You're just using the red cards at Ipswich to fit a made up agenda, the reds at Ipswich weren't down to indiscipline, Thomas' was simply a defender trying to stop the Ipswich striker having a clean run on goal, Kilgour's clearly not even a red. If refs are anti Barton how did we manage to get promoted last season? God, the utter nativity of some fans

Players that hunt the ball down and cause a nuisance: (available) 👉 Kilgour (benched) 👉 Coutts (benched) 👉 Finley (started) 👉 Marquis (benched) As soon as I saw that the majority of our tough element we’re not on the pitch, the annoying grafters that put pressure on the opposition, there was a huge chance of an issue. I’ve not seen a first half where we’ve so dominated the game but made several poor errors / decisions to give away 3 goals needlessly. We were a tad wasteful too at the other end, but that bit was absolutely what we missed today and Joey definitely got this one wrong. A sub after the penalty to get Alfie in would likely have been enough but I do think Barton was reluctant to admit his error this time.

My take on the game yesterday.
The game itself was a highly entertaining game from start to finish, end to end with plenty of chances.
We were shocking defensively, completely unable to stop the Lincoln attack and every time the approached our goal I expected them to score.
We had three recognised central defenders not in the team yesterday (not sure why Kilgour did not play), so it is not surprising that we struggled, but to be fair we have struggled defensively all season so far.
Defence is our major problem and I have 100% confidence that JB will sort it out.
Going forward, we were superb yesterday. Collins is on fire and took his two goals very well (could easily have had a hat-trick). Lovely unselfish set up for Loft as well. He is a quality player and deserves to be top scorer.
Loft I felt had a good game, and is linking up well with Collins. On another day could have had a hat-trick as well.
The positive for me is that we created a LOT of chances, and another day could easily have scored 6 of 7.
Fair play to Lincoln, they had an amazing day out and were very vocal throughout.
Yesterday was one of those days. Lincoln seemed to score every half-chance (some of which we would expect Belshaw to save easily), and we missed our chances.
No time to panic, our team are doing many things right. We will not get relegated this season and JB will "stop the rot" at the back.
You have to remember just how awful we were in September, October and even November last season.
UTG.

The fact was that JB knew there was no point putting Kilgour on as he is no better than the players we had out there and in fact the worse defender of the lot was the other regular Houle who to be honest is useless. Wasted substututions though in bringing on Marquis and Saunders. With the defenders we have fit we are not going to improve for at least 2 or 3 weeks. This is so frustrating though giving away points in another game where footballing wise we were the better team but defensively we werE National League quality.Did Houle manage to pass to one of our players all game? Hoole would be fine if he was just played at right back where he was very good last season. Kilgour is a better central defender than Whelan is. There’s no reason why we can’t defend better with the players we had at our disposal today but the selection and formation was wrong. You’re very harsh on Hoole who made his debut around a year ago and was a very good right back for us last season. Playing him in different positions swapping and changing in an unsettled defence is obviously effecting his game as it is every player, Belshaw included. I read your posts and wonder if you know anything about football or perhaps you’ve got a very short memory or that you just make knee jerk reaction comments based on the game you’ve just watched without actually thinking things through or remembering anything that happened before. Kilgour was also a solid centre back for us in league 1 with an experienced player alongside. when played regularly in a settled defence so he does have ability. We badly miss a commanding defender like Taylor was , perhaps Thomas will be that player but again he was missing today through suspension. I think we’ve got enough attacking ability to stay up and to be honest I’ve got no idea if we’ve got enough defensive ability because it’s very early days regarding seeing our new defensive players and we’ve not been able ho build any kind of defensive cohesion due to injuries and suspensions. How many of those injured were playing against.fgr.shrewsbury.or morecambe?

I’m not making anything fit anything. Ipswich left us without Thomas when we had no Gibson nor Connolly. If you think our indiscipline isn’t a problem then you must be watching different football games to me. It is a major problem, like it or not. Yes, we get red cards that aren’t red cards, Kilgour, but read my post talking about poor referees and you’ll see that that is part of the problem. We generally appear to p*** people off and make an easy target of ourselves. I love Finley but he’s almost a walking volcano waiting to go off. We got promotion because we changed our ways from last Autumn. Sometimes Topper I think you’re contrary just to be contrary. 😉 UTG!

But then we signed anderson and he made the difference from an average sude to a promotion side I think Josh Coburn could have a similar impact once he's fit this season too. He's already got a very decent strike rate at Championship level for an 18/19 year old. Hopefully we get to see him at full fitness.

352 or 532 whatever you want to call it hardly ever seems to work at Rovers. Holloway did it and we played good football with very good players yeah but we still didn’t win anything then. Barton had us playing great football last season 4231 and he could have played that formation yesterday and had 3 of the 4 defenders in their correct positions. If he had I think we might well have won. It’s frustrating because it’s another home game with no win. We MUST go back to basics Saturday , if we’ve only got one right back , one left back and one central defender available like yesterday then go 4231 and put coutts alongside the centre back. Yesterday was a disaster from the minute Barton picked the side and formation. Lots of here saying we had no available defenders but we did he just put them in their wrong positions.

If we play a back 3 - even if if is Thomas, Connelly and Gibson and have Evans as defensive midfielder and two wing backs stationed on the half way line like the set up yesterday, we are going down.
It is incredibly easy to play against as shown by a poor Lincoln team.
If he was insistant on a back 3 it should have been Kilgour with Whelan sat in front. I am not sure Evans and McCormack will be a good combination- at least on a small pitch like the Mem. There just is no space.
I am disappointed in Mangan and Bond. They should not be yes men. The team photo had 19 management and backroom staff. Why could one of them took Joey aside and tell him his team selection and formation was just not going to work?
I know he said it was a "barmy" plan, but I thought it was just him doing his media thing. I didn't think he was actually going to do it.
Hoole and Gordon has received years of training. Defensive work is largely about organisation. Whelan was making taking up some bizarre positions, so the others had to cover. At one point all 3 of our defenders were by the touchline, so a simple ball would have given a midfield runner about 30 yards of space.
Wing backs can work but Anderson was clearly not 100%, McCormack was only about 5 yards from him most of the game and Clarke was bypassed and about 20 yards away from the action as Joey kept telling him where he wanted him - not where the ball was or in fact where it was likely to go!

Another feature missing from last season was players playing wide on the wrong side. Sammy N and Luke T both had the ability to cut in, and obviously Billy E. Yesterday Clarke and Anderson were both wide touching the line with nowhere to go, Lincon just double up either side to stop them.
Also am confused when we have three at the back the two wide CB's are encouraged to get wide again there seemed limited passes open to them. Listened to Kyle Walker yesterday, explaining how he steps inside into midfield. This means he has more passing options than just up the line or across to CB. Noticed Grant doing this last season.

I think the biggest admission from Barton is that he wants to play 3 4 3...
And my critique to that is were a CB light. We have 4, should have 5/6 for that formation.
However, I'm happy with going forward, and increasingly content with Aaron playing off the striker.
Loft has hit some form but he needs to work on his back to goal play. He's doing that novice thing of "being a hold up player" that literally holds the ground/ position hes in. He needs to attack the ball and bring it down. If he can figure that out, he could be a top top league one footballer/ perhaps even Championship.
Also really want one of Coutts, Whelan and Rossiter in the side as a DM- at all times.
Thought Jasper looked OK... (my first look) a little too wide to see how he'd actually impact a game.

Socrates, I tend to agree with you on the three at the back not working but I have sympathy with JB because in all honesty he couldnt put together a reliable defence of four because the players who you would expect to be selected with what we had available are either off form or not good enough for League 1. We will struggle to beat ANY team in this division with what we have AVAILABLE at the moment-it would struggle in League 2 at the moment. Kilgour,Hoole and Gordon are not good enough for League 1- not this week, not next week and not in January. Long term Hoole might be OK at full back next season as may Gordon. Hoole has a huge problem with distribution whether playing centre half or full back, Gordon has a problem defending and looks to me more like an attacking midfielder and could have a future there but it is one area where we have a lot of options. Kilgour unfortunately has not progressed at all which IMO and people will criticise me for this has been the problem with most of our local talent. It is ok to say that Kilgour being nursed through a game by Tony Craig was OK but Tony Craig was very special in having the ability to be reliable himself and ORGANISE others- Ehmer was supposed to do that but failed miserably and in truth Kilgour should now have been the commanding centre half who could lead young players around him but unfortunately has not progressed and does not appear to have any natural ability to mark a player or position himself and no pace whatsoever. What JB needs and knows it is players GOOD enough to play in those positions in either formation. I could see what he was trying to achieve by playing Whelan at the back and I think it would have worked had we had a RELIABLE centre half like Craig or Connor- Taylor. Maybe Coutts would have been a better choice for that role but he to would probably have struggled too. We have lots of players who could successfully play centre half but unfortunately they were all injured or suspended. It is easy to say that JB should have signed another centre back or another right back but the chances are with the bad luck we have had so far that they too would have been injured!! Unless JB can find a centre half available out of contract then we will struggle to win next week.
