Belshaw 6 good saves. Not sure about first goal. Was it deflected? Hard to tell even from highlights.
Anderson 5 Hoole 5 Connolly 6.5 by far the best of the defence Gordon 5
Coutts 5 Finley 6 Evans 4.5 couldn’t get on the ball
Saunders 5.5 Marquis 4.5 nothing stuck Collins 5 needed to go with his left a couple of times and by the chance he switched to his right the chance had gone
Subs: Gibson 5 Whelan 7.5 really classy. Can he give us more minutes? We really need him at the moment Rossiter 5 game passed him by initially but a couple of moments later on showed there is a player in there. Needs more minutes to get up to speed. Loft 5 Kilgour 5.5

Belshaw 6 some important saves but still not sure about their opener which set the tone for the entire game
Anderson 4.5 worked hard but caught out so many times especially first half Hoole 4 poor on the ball, poor tracking men. Exposed the fact he isn’t a centre back Connolly 5.5 best of a very poor back line Gordon 4.5 poor and too much backward passing
Coutts 4 a long way off the pace Finley 5.5 had a few little glimmers, not enough Evans 3.5 really poor in possession
Saunders 5 poor bloke chasing dire long balls all game Marquis 3 nothing stuck Collins 5.5 the only player that looked even remotely good enough to play in the Barnsley side
Subs: Gibson 5 Whelan 6 Rossiter 3 Loft 4 Kilgour na
Ref 5 he let a lot go Barnsley 8 made us look well out of our depth

Belshaw 4 Some reasonable saves but badly at fault for first and third goals
Anderson 4.5 Tried hard but gets caught out defensively against the better sides Hoole 3 Caught out time and time again Connolly 6 Best player on the night Gordon 5 Average performance
Coutts 4 Lacking match fitness Finley 4.5 Poor by his very high standards Evans 3 Unusually poor
Saunders 3 Sorry but headless chicken who puts effort in Marquis 3 Very poor game but service was poor too Collins 3 Not really in the game
Subs: Gibson 5 ok Whelan 6 Looks the best of our midfield at the moment Rossiter 4.5 Sluggish but give the bloke a chance and he will come good Loft 5 ok Kilgour 5 did ok in short time
Ref 5 Let too much go which went in Barnsleys favour as they were on top and seemed to get away with a lot. Barnsley 8 A top 6 team I reckon but dealt with the conditions better and took advantage of poor defending We look well short of attacking players and lack a Thomas, Nicholson, Andersen who have not yet been replaced and a commanding centre half. I would say we are five or six players short and time is running out. We need another striker, an experienced centre half, attacking midfielder, winger and another full back. Play like that again saturday and it will be another hammering.

From Follow:
Belshaw 6.5 m o m if it wasn't for him, it would've been much worse.
Anderson 6 ran tons. Hoole 4 poor at CD and exposed, turned around to make look a fool and gave ball away in crazy positions. Connolly 6.5 best of defence. Gordon 5 couldn't affect positive outcomes.
Coutts 6 tried hard but was steamrolled. Easily booked. Finley 5 not his match, easily booked. Evans 3 anonymous, rightly subbed.
Saunders 6.5 some great running and also tracking in defending. Couldn't stop onslaught. Marquis 3 maybe a Donny/Barny angst where he just appeared to niggle himself and almost got booked. Fouled every time he challenged. Collins 6unusual for him to not affect game, but his running and effort, noted.
Subs: Gibson 6.5 looks a bit of class. Whelan 6.5 a better replacement for coutts. Rossiter5 some nice moments. Loft 4 whom? I've seen better lofts in Bradley Stoke newbuild. Kilgour n o l e.
Ref 7.5 good game, good game. Barnsley 9 wizardry. A lesson in midfield and defence dissection, as well as bisection. Their passing and movement was memorising, and many a time we were individually spun around trying to keep up or plainly on our ar$e.
We had no answer.
For all their quality, we still huffed and puffed, credit to players for their aptitude. Not enough quality on the night and only positive I can draw is no injuries, no one sent off and the Gas crowd made themselves heard on a dreary day and night to forget!
Let's learn from this and move on...

Belshaw 7 m.o.m. maybe could have done better on first goal but kept the score down and having a suspect defence in front of him didldnt have helped much Anderson 5 he was ran ragged but never stopped putting in the effort Hoole 4.5 shown up by the big experienced Barnsley forwards, him and Anderson both playing out of position is a recipe for disaster against league ones better sides. Connolly 5,5 made mistakes but was still the pick of of weak defence. Gordon 4.5 a tough night he will want to forget. Coutts 5 ring rusty and wisely subbed at half time. Finley 6 did his best propping up an off colour midfield. Evans 5 played too deep and created virtually nothing. Saunders. 5.5 ran and ran but achieved little Marquis 4 he had no service and is not a target man, so lumping the ball forward was a total waste of time, he needs the ball played in the right places which sadly didnt happen. Collins 5.5 starved of the ball and needs to play closer to Marquis for both their sakes. Subs: Gibson 6 an improvement on what went before Whelan 6.5 a tidy game Rossiter 6 gradually improving but still not match fit. Loft 6 he ,at least made the Barnsley defence break sweat. Kilgour n.p.l.e. Ref 6 very lenient Barnsley 8 very good, they did their homework on us,play offs at least I reckon.

Hard game to mark properly on iFollow, the commentators don’t help much. It seemed to me that almost everyone had an off night. Even Belshaw, on other nights he might have saved the first easily and cleared properly for the third, and we might have been moaning about losing 1-0 to a cruel deflection. But we all know we were taken apart by a much better side. So…
Belshaw 5. Saved a couple
Anderson. 6. Energetic Hoole. 5. A better full back I think but if Barton wants to play him in the middle then fine by me. Connolly 4.5. Not great. Gordon. 4
Finley 5 Coutts 4. Oh dear. Couldn’t get in the game. Evans 4. When just about our best player is so anonymous it is a bad sign.
Collins. 5.5. Better second half. Marquis 4.5. Little service but not a great game. Saunders. 6. Energetic.
Subs. I hate the abundance of substitutions teams now make. I may have forgotten someone. Whelan. 5.5. Looked class in among the mess. Rossiter. 5 Loft. 5 At one stage he controlled the ball on his chest as it was played up to him and then laid the ball off to one of our chaps. Not much I know, but I don’t remember anyone else doing it last night. The lad from Everton, forgotten his name, sorry. 5 Kilgour. 5.
Barnsley. 8. Strong, fast, disciplined. What’s not to like ? Ref. 7.5. We couldn’t have moaned had he sent Connolly off. Tried to let it flow on a vile night.

Results in and Glenn Whelan was Man of the Match with a score of 6.24.
This was Whelan's first MotM in these threads after 36 league games. Before this game, only Zain Westbrooke (46 league games) and Cian Harries (47) had played more games without a single MotM. This isn't taking account of other players who had gone longer before their first (e.g. Tom Nichols took till his 63rd league game)
He is the first substitute to be MotM since Harvey Saunders in the eighth league game of last season (Leyton Orient at home).
The starting XI average was 4.68, the lowest since Oldham away (4.41) last season.
Belshaw 5.8
Anderson 5.0 Hoole 4.4 Connolly 5.4 Gordon 4.3
Coutts 4.2 Finley 5.1 Evans 3.7
Saunders 5.0 Marquis 4.0 Collins 4.7
Subs: Gibson 5.0 Whelan 6.2 Rossiter 4.8 Loft 4.8 Kilgour 5.2
