I was reading about this yesterday. Players who feature for any youth side, including U21 level, are eligible to change nationalities. Additionally, players who played for a country, but not at senior level, who were under 21 at the time and have since lived in a different country for five years or more are eligible to switch. At senior level, players can switch nationalities as long as they have played three senior matches or less, and those appearances came when they were under the age of 21.

This whole footballing nationality thing is far more complex than it needs to be or should be.
What's on your bloody passport? That should be it.

Sounds like he played well reading a few things on twitter. I can't see him playing for us next season as he's getting noticed more and more.

You are correct Sir. This was mentioned during the Wales game today and was the reason Wales selected Ramsey for his full international debut when he was sixteen.

Scotland impressed as they held group winners Belgium to a draw in their penultimate European Under-21 Championship qualifier in Stayen.
Scot Gemmill's side remain fourth behind Denmark and Turkey, but they will take heart from an improved display in a disappointing campaign.
Newcastle United midfielder Elliot Anderson came closest for Scotland with a second-half stab towards goal.
Unbeaten Belgium failed to test visiting goalkeeper Ross Sinclair.
With Scotland shorn of some of their more established names, like Rangers winger Glenn Middleton, Hibernian left-back Josh Doig and Aberdeen right-back Calvin Ramsay, there were fears about how they would fare against the latest talented group off Belgium's youth production line.
However, home head coach Jacky Mathijssen made seven changes from the side that drew 1-1 in Herning last time out - a result that secured top spot thanks to their better head-to-head record over hosts Denmark.
And Scotland's high press, combined with a pitch turned sodden by heavy rain, had the young Red Devils under pressure early on.
Anderson and Aberdeen's Connor Barron impressed in midfield and both tested Genk goalkeeper Maarten Vandevoordt from around 18 yards after some clever footwork.
Rangers centre-half Lewis Mayo was perhaps fortunate to only be shown a yellow for hauling Anthony Descotte back as the Belgian forward burst clear.
Fellow Charleroi attacker Anass Zaroury was proving to be the hosts' biggest threat and his trickery led to a thumping drive a few feet over the crossbar and his speed to a shot into the side-netting.
Scotland, though, did have the ball in the net before the break with Celtic centre-half Stephen Welsh crashing home from close range only for the effort to be ruled out for Mayo's climb above a defender in heading down from a corner.
Belgium improved after the break and yet another Charleroi forward, Nkuba Tshiend, sent a dipping drive just over and Mayo was relieved to see Freiburg full-back Hugo Siquet fire into the side-netting after a wayward pass.
It looked like Scotland might secure only their second victory in seven group games when Barron's fine cross found Anderson charging in at the back post, but the Newcastle man could only direct it wide of the near upright under pressure
No victory, but Gemmill's side will now host the Danes on Friday with renewed optimism after denying Belgium a fifth consecutive victory.

Blimey, we are jumping the gun a bit here, he has had on fantastic season with what was a league 2 club, it’s a long way from being picked and playing for England. I do wish him all the very best though, of course

This whole footballing nationality thing is far more complex than it needs to be or should be. What's on your bloody passport? That should be it. I'm not sure it's that simple - what would you do with places like Kosovo who only had a football team from 2014, and a lot of their team are Serbian and Albanian. Plus people like British legend Mo Farah, who's Somali or players like John Barnes who's Jamaican. Big old can of worms, this. I'm eligible to represent China despite never having been anywhere near there 😅

I remember the pulava when Zola Budd represented us in the olympics. It has made a mockery of having a team that is truly representative of the nation but we have had to move with the every changing political climate. I know i go on about it but Germany would not have had the success they had, not without Polish born Mirolsav Klose ( birth name Mirosław Kłos ) & Lukasz Podolski. I totally get the will to win but cannot help but feel that this is still just a cheap cheat. It really does niggle me, badly

Looks as though Sheffield Wednesday are interested in Elliot I'd be disappointed if he went there. I think a Championship club would be best for his development.

I'm eligible to represent China despite never having been anywhere near there 😅 Yes, it’s not at all simple now. For a start with the increased mobility and opportunities for people over the past 20 or more years they live in different countries, meet different people, marry and so on. It’s not the 1960s!! I guess if you stay in the UK it must seem very simple. Just thinking about my family, my grandkids have passports for 3 countries and nationality for 2 because of where they’ve lived, where they were born and their mum’s nationality. Yet they are just normal kids like many others who’ve had a similar start to life. Life is never as simple for some as it is for others. I guess it’s why they have fairly complex rules about sporting allegiances and so on and why Elliot A will be hedging his bets over the next year or so. Getting himself noticed by England whilst playing well for Scotland may well be a very sensible thing to do, a bit like Declan Rice and Grealish a few years ago. I’m sure those concerned with England will be monitoring his progress very closely esp with the publicity he’s had with us. Good luck with whatever route he takes. UTG!

As usual, a very balanced and sensible post. One must never project ones own opinions and bias onto others. I have been guilty of this and i try not to do it now but occasionally get overly emotional, these are times when i think it best i stay quiet. It is too easy to expect others to act and react in the same way that i do wrt nationality.

Looks as though Sheffield Wednesday are interested in Elliot Anderson should be playing in the championship as a minimum IMO. However if he were to play in league 1 next season, there’s no denying on paper Wednesday are the biggest attraction on paper. Having said that though, I’m not sure a team who play 3-5-2 like Wednesday do would suit Anderson all too well. He’s better off playing for a side where the wingers aren’t expected as much in the defensive responsibilities.

Although I suppose getting different experiences, playing a different system would be part of his education in football styles and what loans are all about. He will need to get used to playing with a back 3 behind him and not just a back 4. I suspect Eddie H will be considering all his options after pre season training. Perhaps Wednesday are a bigger attraction, but they will be playing the same teams we are and with us he will be playing nearly every match which might not be the case at Wednesday. As ever time will tell. UTG!
