Is this the game that BG has realised we need to change our style against the top sides? Im still undecided on him, sometimes you can watch his team and think his style could be great if it works, other times we look dreadfull. To be successful you need to be able to mix your game up at this level, and hopefully Garner has now realised this. Personally, i would love to see us play out from the back and build up attacks through passing football, which seems to be his way, but sometime you need to be more direct to get the result. If we could mix the GC steel, and never say die attitude with the ability to hold on to the ball when we have it, i would be very excited about the season ahead

I'm not sure about pretty football from the back. It requires confident ball playing players in the back line and in midfield. If you've got those types great. However we are talking about L1 football where such players are in relative short supply.
I'm all behind the effort to get Rovers playing both winning and attractive football.
Regardless of style, let's face it. We would have been delighted with a point away at Sunderland however achieved. It's a good start.

Sheffield United are playing 3 central at the back and Wolves are tearing them apart. Albeit their players have very good control and pace. Jimenez is unbelievable. Against Ipswich, they will press us high and put us under pressure so best to get it out ASAP early on and see how it goes. Until the players get to know each other and this is a very new team, safety first. Sheffield have resigned a goalie for £20M. Wonder what Jakkola is worth after each game?

Not for us and especially not in L2 against quick teams like Ipswich, Charlton, Accy, etc. PS As one does, I was YouTubing a lot of Sunderland podcasts late last night and cannot remember anyone of them talking about the 2nd yellow card sending off or the blatant simulation dive for a penalty which ref never gave a yellow but all our players complained about. If it was Sinclair, instant yellow?

Power's now whining about our time wasting but I can't recall thinking we were taking the p, although the 8 minutes extra time added on must have more than covered any time wasting anyway. The way Jaakola was playing I doubt they'd score if they had an extra hours ET anyway!

It was also noticeable how their fans were really having a go at Parkinson their manager. Puts the criticism of BG to shame?

Next match seems ages away especially as Ipswich only played Sunday and have another game Wed so as they travel to Bristol Friday they should be knackered for Sat.Ten nil win Gas.

Yes - could be playing them at a good time, especially as they are playing Premier League opposition so should put out a strong side. Let’s hope for extra time and penalties tomorrow night!

Their forum is pretty shocking for all sorts of reasons, sense of billy big bo**** thinking they’ve just to turn up to win, giving Parkinson real abuse and certain players. You’d have thought they’d have learnt that to play in a lower division they’ve got to knuckle down and earn it not just expect it. They also have very short memories. Last year Ogogo got sent off there which changed the match. Istr it was a red but their gamesmanship certainly played a part in it. McGuire being the main culprit. Karma!! UTG!

UTG After how ruthlessly Ipswich exposed our 3-4-3 in the cup match I’d be tempted to go 3-5-2 on Saturday - pack the midfield and stick Ayunga-Hanlan up top to give us an outlet playing over their high press.

I was at that game and that was never a red. They were getting desperate. We kept them playing across the pitch and they couldn't get around or behind us and we were in for a certain point. Ogogo did foul their player in a nowhere part of the pitch, a yellow at most. That cheating Lady Garden McGuire went down like he had an axe through his leg and the crowd were screaming for the red. As soon as it was shown McGuire was up and trotting away and being congratulated by his team mates. It it was only a matter of time before they scored, but their second was a travesty. Two of our players, I think Alfie and Milwall Tone were down with head injuries in the Sunderland half. The ball went to that fat lump Wyke who was away on goal and the friggin bottle less, cheating ref let him play on, round our keeper and score. He then let the physio on to see to our lads, happy that he had made sure Sunderland had won. I really enjoyed beating the cheating northern twats in March. It was a joy listening to their fans bitching, whinging and whining after the game as they left the ground. Our victory that evening put a stop to them making the play offs, so it was a delicious dish of cold revenge as far as I'm concerned.

Not for me. Has to be 4 at the back, 2 at front (if not 1 in early stages).

I knew the sending off was questionable but even so my point stands. McGuire’s gamesmanship and their general playing the referee got them a win. I’d forgotten what happened with the Wyke goal. Got all they deserved. If you give it out you’ve got to be able to take it. Glad to see that we might be getting a bit clever in game management. UTG!

Just noticed this on a Sunderland news report. Some bloke moaning that Sunderland don't get their fair share of decisions from refs. Anyone have a view on what he's talking about (I didn't watch the the game)?
"We also were reminded we can get red cards when other teams may not – the opposition two-footer in about the 15th minute would be a red all day in most games, but then Dobson’s wasn’t exactly something to complain about."

He just sounds like a right bell to me, conveniently forgetting what happened with the ex shithead? 2nd yellow card in hand, oh wait a minute I can’t possibly send him off he plays for the mighty Sunderland!
