I thought we deserved to win. I thought we were poor. I thought upson was terrible. I thought lockyer and reilly played well. Tariq-holmes was limping before he went off which is a worry. We did play with more width today. The ref was dreadful as he always is. We are set up in a very similar style to before as we dont press the ball but coughlan has opted for traditional style wide players. The crowd were great in the 2nd half. Jakubiak is lazy. Is this a haiku match report BB? Had to google that but yes i suppose it is.

THD limping was a worry, he is our key to the door IMHO Didn't see him limp? I assumed he was subbed due to only just returning from injury. I agree, I really like him. He has a bit of pace which I like and allows us to attack on the front foot at home. I think he could be versatile down all that left hand side too.

The bench waved to him a few minutes before he came off and he gave them the thumbs up to acknowledge he was being substituted. Think he was just tired, not surprised he really put in a shift and was my mom, at last someone with real pace and control and liked him and Kelly on our left.

First matchday thread I've created! I even got the score right!! Great game! I thought the atmosphere was tremendous, especially after the sending off. I thought Reilly and Jak played really well together, although Linesy could easily have been sent off? Huxtable is easily the worse Referee I've seen. He caused the problem that ended with Joey Barton being sent off and the near riot on the touchline! At the end of the day it was the correct result and you could see the passion that Coughlan and the players had. Just hope we carry that into the Walsall/Oxford games. I might even start another thread if my luck holds?? and I thought we won because I bought a programme for the first time in yonks

Not lockyers fault he had his man stopped him cutting inside but nobody picked up the other man running in behind him. Don't agree I'm afraid. Their player was allowed to get to a ball that he should have got nowhere near. Once again water poor defending by captain crap. You're having a laugh... no way their goal was Tom's fault. Once again water poor commenting by tbone (aka captain negative)

At the time, I thought Bonham should have come out but watching it back I’m not so sure he should have

I know it was struck well and swerving but it wasn’t very far away from him. Who cares anyway as we won UTG!

Socrates has been saying this for weeks. Width was what won us the game yesterday with Rodman and Holmes-Dennis vying for the MoM award.
Whether it will work as well away from home when we need to be tighter is another thing, as is the ongoing question of fitting our (IMO) best central midfielders in Lines and Sercombe into such a system. But yesterday clearly showed how much more difficult it is to defend a wider space.
Have you sent your CV to our esteemed CEO yet Socrates?!

If you watch the highlights again I think it takes a slight but significant deflection from a defender (think it's lockyer) so he had a good sight of it as it was pretty much heading for him until then. I.e. he would have saved it but deflections like that and at that speed catch out almost all goalkeepers.

Their goal tool a slight deflection and this is why the shot beat Bonham. Good performance overall - THD particularly impressive, normally he plays as a defender, but he didn't look out of place because his touch and movement was so good

Their goal was a good strike with a very slight touch of a deflection. Sometimes you just have to acknowledge a good goal when you see it. I’m not sure there was anything anyone could have done about it. Locks got back well and JC covered the angle as best he could. Bonham almost got his glove on it.
Hunter had a great game all afternoon for them and I was surprised when he came off as much as I was relieved.

I haven’t mate but I’ve been a goalkeeper since I was old enough to kick and catch a ball and I know that when a team sets up narrow without attacking fullbacks you just tell your fullbacks to tuck in close to your center half’s, ideally the boss will stick an anchor man just in front of the back four too and if your well drilled and expecting it then for them it’s like trying to break down a brick wall. It’s good to mix it up of course keep them guessing but playing right footers on the left and lefties on the right every game was so easy for whoever we played week in week out. The reason we’ve not seen Bennet under GC yet is he drifts inside regardless of what side he’s playing I think.

I don't mind wingers cutting inside, but agree it was getting predictable and would have liked them to have swapped wings from time to time, just to give the full backs something different to think about. Ironically though, whenever Matthews got the ball on the left yesterday, he cut inside too. Would have liked him to have run at the full back down the outside a bit more. Still, onwards and hopefully upwards!!
