Any players or teams you are particularly looking forward to watching?
Apart from the usual suspects, I'm looking forward to seeing Daniel Arzani (Australia), Moussa Konate (Senegal), Hirving Lozano (Mexico), Emil Forsberg (Sweden), Aleksandr Golovin (Russia) and Pione Sisto (Denmark).

I think Milinkovic Savic will be worth watching with Serbia, he’s only had 2 caps for Serbia so far as their previous manager refused to play him, it will also interesting to see how Goretzka does with Germany, both will be playing with big clubs next year. Switzerland have an exciting young team with Zakaria and Embolo so I’ll probably watch their games too.

Luka Milivojevic has massively impressed me at Crystal Palace this season, so it will be interesting to see if he plays and how he gets on for Serbia too. I think Palace will have a hard job keeping hold of him. Another good player for Switzerland to keep an eye on is the centre back Manuel Akanji. He joined Borussia Dortmund from Basle in January and has impressed.

I don't really watch the PL so it'll be nice to see some of the hyped players from that, Salah, Otamendi etc. Contrary to popular opinion I always like watching Sterling and hopefully he kicks on in an England shirt after having a great season.
I've always been a bit interested in Japanese football just cuz it's really bonkers so I'll look forward to seeing them, although they're not as strong as they have been at the moment. However they still have Inui, Kagawa, Okazaki and Honda who provided one of my favorite WC moments back in 2010:
Always enjoy watching countries in their first ever finals too. Iceland will be fascinating.

OK, I'm going to stick my scrawny neck out..........I reckon Germany are going to struggle. There, I've said it ! Why? There are small signs that all is not well in the German camp. Training ground bust-up last week. They haven't won in in their last five games. They don't have a decent striker. Indications are that Jurgen Löw should have left after winning last time. Manual Neuer (keeper) has hardly played in the last ten months. Last week they lost a friendly to Austria. That is Austria who haven't qualified for the Finals and all their players really wanted to be on the beach somewhere. My wife and son may be in tears at the Germans demise, and I will give them both a hug while quietly grinning

Point out that Germans marching into Russia, has never tended to end well. They will thank you for your kindness and understanding. Possibly.

Big scandal here a few years back, when German troops in Afghanistan were caught wearing t-shirts that basically said, "I got further East than my Grandad". It made me chuckle anyway. We don't mention the Russian Front in our house. My (now dead) Father-In-Law lost a Brother there. It's not easy explaining to my seven year old that he had one Grandad (now dead) fighting with the British, and the other Grandad fighting for the Germans ! I haven't discovered the full picture yet, but I reckon the relatives of my German family were a bit dodgy. Anytime soon I expect to find some pictures of geezers in SS uniforms !

It`s not a conversation that`s easy to imagine, is it?
"My grandfather was at Treblinka, in 1944." "Oh, my God, that`s awful." "No no, he wasn`t an inmate, he was a guard. He used to pick up the Zyklon B from the local station, and drive it up to the camp. And when the tins were empty, he used to take the kids to the beach, and they`d make sandcastles. He was heartbroken when the place had to close."

Only a couple of days now. Expectations........now there is a word. What are the teams/countries expectations?
It seems as though England will be happy to just reach the Quarter Finals. The English media and public appear to be happy if England get knocked out in the QF.....good effort and all that. Germany? The expectation is a semi-final place. Anything less would be a national disaster. Brazil? As always, they expect to win it.
Any other thoughts on other countries?

I'm looking forward to watching Belgium and think they'll do ok and I expect England will be knocked in the quarter final.

I also fancy Spain. They have quality all over the pitch, and throughout their squad. I think Belgium will be their usual selves, and not do themselves justice.
