Nobody has mentioned the Aussie cricket scandal yet. As more and more 'information' becomes available, it appears as though this ball tampering was not just a one-off offence.
Should the players and coaches involved be banned, and for how long?

Should the players and coaches involved be banned, and for how long? Incredibly stupid thing to do and both players involved will be banned i presume and lose their sponsors. But it's happened before, not just so blatantly on camera view. I remember Michael Atherton carrying dirt in his pocket then craftily rubbing it onto the ball, his excuse at the time was he used it to make his hands less sweaty. Pakistan had a player banned for biting and chewing the seam, it has gone on for ages and at all levels, hardly a gentleman's game anymore.

It was no different to players wiping their hands on the ground, as they always do now. But this was premeditated and planned. A minimum of five senior players, and possibly the coach all discussed this, and then implemented the plan by using the youngest player, who probably felt a bit of pressure to do as he was told. It has also been 'suggested' that they had to change their normal practice because Warner was seen by a member of the groundstaff to be applying sandpaper type tape to his bandaged fingers during the second test.

Atherton was cheating plain and simple. If you got sweaty hands carry a handkerchief or some tissue by all means not a pocket full of grit/dirt. As i said the cheating is at all levels.

Watch ANY current spin baller, and they all rub their hands near the return crease to pick up dust to dry their hands.

Correct, but that is completely different to scouring grit onto one side of the ball to make it swing unevenly through the air.

We did something similar a few years back. Think it was Anderson would chew a mint sweet, then with the saliva rub it into the ball, pretty much what the Aussie were doing to the ball, so it would reverse swing. Quite how the Aussies thought they would get away with it, with all the cameras at the game now God only knows. As someone said earlier its not a gentleman's game anymore, there is way to much money involved now.
Smith should be sacked as captain, and given a hefty ban. Lehman should be sacked as coach. Bancroft should be given a hefty ban too. Same goes for anyone else involved. Nice big ban. I noticed former England players are asking if the Aussies did the same during the Ashes! Don't know about that, given we were sh!te they would have beaten us regardless if they cheated!!

Glad they have been caught. At least we won't have to watch that irritating sh** Smith anymore. The blokes mannerisms get on my bloody wick.

He's banned for one test against the South Africans but unless your an avid follower of Australian cricket there is not much opportunity to watch him anyway. Love him or hate him, he is a great cricketer.

Love him or hate him, he is a great cricketer. Not doubting his batting ability. He is an all time great. It's his constant moving about in the crease that winds me up. Do you really think his ban will be only one match? He is the captain of a team that has been caught abusing the games etiquette I doubt if we will see him play test cricket again.

I'm not bothered too much about cricket but it's nice to see that smug, self satisfied and holier than thou Aussie sportsmens sh** does stink after all.
I'm struggling to think of a single sportsman of any discipline and any nation that doesn't cheat these days.
Suppose it's always been so.

I have no evidence for this at all, but I would bet my cat's next dinner that some of the top European football players are dosed up on performance enhancing drugs.
There's millions of pounds involved. Far more than the Tour De France, which, as we all know, has more drugs per cyclist than the average Boots the Chemist.
Rio Ferdinand forgot to turn up for his drug test in 2003. Silly forgetful Rio. That was then.
I would imagine it's moved on to a whole new level 15 years later.

I'm struggling to think of a single sportsman of any discipline and any nation that doesn't cheat these days. Suppose it's always been so. It's that fine line between bending the rules and breaking the rules. I see that Cricket Australia have sent three players home (Smith, Warner and Bancroft) but it beggers belief that others were not involved. CA seem hell-bent on trying to cover-up the magnitude of the incident. It's pretty obvious the bowlers must have known what was going on, as they inspect the ball probably more than anyone else on the pitch, and they must have seen the effects the cheating had on the actual ball. After all, it was the bowlers who then had to perform the correct action to make the ball swing. When the pictures first appeared on tv, the Coach (Lehman) was seen talking on a walkie-talkie to the 12th man, who then promptly ran onto the pitch to inform Bancroft that he had been 'spotted'. Bancroft then tried to hide the evidence in his pants ! It appears that the Coach was involved, and some of the bowlers also had to be involved. However, I think CA were not keen to be seen sending half their team home !

Yes, they do it now but at the time 1996, I think, it was cheating which he got away with, apart from a £2000 fine. At that time Richie Benaud was appalled and it was bad. But compared to what has happened this week quite tame.
